Connecticut Republicans Call for Secure Elections Amid Democrat Inaction

Jun 25, 2024

HARTFORD, CT — Connecticut Republican Chairman Ben Proto today demanded answers from Governor Ned Lamont and Attorney General William Tong following the tragic death of 21-year-old Ryan O’Shea, a University of New Haven senior, hockey captain, and aspiring NYPD officer.

O’Shea was killed in a head-on collision on I-91 by Guillermo Carmona-Lopez, an illegal immigrant living in Bridgeport who, according to federal authorities, had previously been removed from the United States, illegally reentered, received another removal order, and subsequently entered the country yet again.

Chairman Proto issued the following statement:

“Governor Lamont, Attorney General Tong — WHEN DOES IT STOP?

“A promising 21-year-old young man is dead. A son, a student, a hockey captain, and a future police officer whose life was stolen in a horrific crash involving someone who had no legal right to be in this country.

“Yet Governor Lamont and Attorney General Tong continue fighting President Trump’s efforts to enforce our immigration laws, apprehend those here illegally, and deport individuals who have repeatedly violated those laws.

“Apparently, their allegiance to their political agenda takes precedence over protecting Connecticut families.

“Governor Lamont and Attorney General Tong owe Ryan O’Shea’s family and every Connecticut resident answers to some very simple questions:

  1. Did Carmona-Lopez have a Connecticut driver’s license? If so, when and how did he obtain it?
  2. Had he previously come into contact with Connecticut state or local law enforcement?
  3. Were Connecticut authorities aware of his illegal immigration status and outstanding federal removal order?
  4. Did Connecticut’s Trust Act prevent law enforcement from notifying or cooperating with federal immigration authorities?
  5. Could greater cooperation with federal immigration authorities have prevented this tragedy?
  6. Will Governor Lamont and Attorney General Tong apologize to Ryan’s family and acknowledge that their immigration policies deserve serious scrutiny?

“These are questions that demand answers, not political excuses.

“President Trump is trying to remove individuals like Carmona-Lopez from our country. Lamont and Tong continue defending policies that restrict cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.

“We do not yet know whether Connecticut’s Trust Act played a role in this tragedy. But we deserve to know.

“Governor Lamont, your first responsibility is to protect the people of Connecticut, not your political agenda. Attorney General Tong, your responsibility is to uphold the law, not wage political war against President Trump.

“Ryan O’Shea should be alive today, preparing to graduate and begin a lifetime of service to others. Instead, his family is mourning a future that will never be.

“Our hearts and prayers are with the O’Shea family. They deserve answers, accountability, and action.

“Governor Lamont, Attorney General Tong — HOW MANY MORE INNOCENT LIVES MUST BE LOST? WHEN DOES IT STOP?”
