Connecticut Republican Party Statement on the Minneapolis School Shooting
Our hearts break for the students, families, and educators impacted by today’s tragic school shooting in Minneapolis. We in Connecticut know better than most the devastation this brings, not only to the families but to the entire community.
No parent should ever fear for their child’s safety when they send them to school. No student should ever have to experience the terror of violence in what should be a safe place of learning and growth.
We stand with the victims, their loved ones, and the entire Minneapolis community as they grieve this senseless act of violence.
But compassion alone is not enough. We must confront the reality that violent crime continues to devastate our communities. Schools, neighborhoods, and cities are not immune to the consequences when policymakers refuse to prioritize public safety, when they refuse to confront the mental illness issues that our society is facing. It is time for serious action to hold criminals accountable, give law enforcement the tools they need, and restore order to our communities so that we can intervene when individuals need help and stop this scourge of senseless murders.
Our children and families deserve better than to live in fear that they may not come home from what should be a safe, secure, nurturing, and learning environment. Preventing future tragedies means supporting strong anti-crime initiatives, investing in school safety, and rejecting policies that weaken accountability for those who commit violent acts.
Today, we mourn. Tomorrow, we must act—because keeping our kids safe is not negotiable.
